There is nothing so calming, so comforting as settling down with a bit of needlework. Tiny stitches finishing a hem, colourful cross stitch initialing a linen napkin, whatever it is, this gentle focus - with no rush, no pressure to finish, no one expecting delivery within the hour - no, make that the next ten minutes - ahhhhhhh!

Now you all know how much I love Liberty in London. Especially the crafts department with its packs of printed cottons for patchwork, its rows of beautifully coloured wools for knitting, its kits and patterns and delicious trimmings. 

And then today I discovered these enchanting embroideries mounted on the wall (sorry for the photo quality, the light was dim). Pretty handkerchiefs, each embroidered with a simple phrase, ideally about happiness. Ahhhhh!
